Remembering Susan’s Fear Truth #5

It’s hard not to feel helpless and scared in the midst of this pandemic crisis. A lot of us are probably feeling as if there is nothing we can do. The fear of the pandemic overwhelming us. It doesn’t have to be that way.

In Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, Susan wrote about the Five Truths About Fear, and while it’s always good to keep all five in mind, for what we’re going through now, Truth 5 should be our focus.

Truth 5:

Pushing through fear is less frightening

than living with the underlying fear

that comes from a feeling of helplessness.

“Read it again,” Susan wrote. “I know it’s hard to take in at first. It says that no matter how ‘secure’ any of us feel in the little cocoon we have built for ourselves, we live, consciously or unconsciously, with the fear that the day of reckoning will eventually come.”

Sure we’re scared right now—the virus is a fearful thing—but we don’t need to feel helpless. Even while isolated at home, none of us are helpless. In fact, most of us, while feeling helpless, are doing a pretty good job of being helpful. We’re taking precautions to not get infected, we’re staying at home, being supportive of our friends, and we’re trying to help out local businesses as much as we can. For those of us still going to work, we are helping to keep other people safe, healthy, and thriving.
